The full story
Not a name-swap template. Not a clip-art face pasted on a stock character. An actual story, written around your child, with illustrations that look like them — across every single page.
Here is exactly what happens from the moment you start to the moment a book lands on your child's shelf.
Everything starts with the child. We ask for their first name, their age, and a short description of what they look like — hair color, eye color, skin tone, the things that make them distinctively them. This is what our illustration model uses to anchor the character design for the entire book.
You can also upload a reference photo. If you do, our system uses it as a visual guide — not to directly reproduce the photo, but to capture the spirit of your child: the roundness of their face, the length of their hair, the warmth in their expression. The result feels like an artist studied your child and drew from memory, not like a filter was applied.
We also ask a few optional detail questions: what are their favorite things? Do they have a pet? A best friend? A beloved stuffed animal? These details get woven into the story text by our writing model, making each book feel like it was written by someone who actually knows your child — because in a sense, it was.
We offer 12 narrative structures — we call them themes — that have been carefully written as story beat templates. Each one follows a proven emotional arc: a problem, a journey, a moment of doubt, a resolution that reveals something true about the character. Bedtime Adventure, Space Mission, Superhero Origin, Magical Kingdom Quest — these are not generic story titles. They are specific emotional journeys your child will go through as the main character.
Alongside the theme, you choose from three art styles: Watercolor Classic (soft, warm, hand-painted), Pixar 3D (dimensional, cinematic, richly lit), or Storybook Flat (bold shapes, clean color, modern). Each style has a distinct visual identity, and we generate a free 3-page preview in whichever style you choose before asking for payment.
The preview generation takes under 8 minutes. You will see three actual pages from your book — with your child's name in the text, their appearance in the illustrations, and the narrative beginning to unfold. If you love it, you purchase. If something isn't right, you tell us and we regenerate. We don't charge until you're satisfied.
Once you approve the preview, we generate the remaining 15 pages. Claude, Anthropic's writing model, takes the story template and fills in a fresh narrative — incorporating the child's name, their appearance, their interests, and the specific emotional beats of the chosen theme. No two books are alike. The model does not pull from a library of pre-written stories; it writes a new one every time, calibrated to the child's age and the story structure you selected.
For each page, a separate illustration prompt is generated — a detailed visual description of the scene, the child's specific appearance, the mood, the lighting, the environment. These prompts are fed to our image generation model, which produces a consistent visual representation of your child across all 18 pages. This is the hard part. Maintaining character consistency across 18 separate AI-generated illustrations is what competitors cannot do. It requires careful prompt engineering at the scene level, plus a consistency anchor pass that checks character appearance before each image is finalized.
The full book generation — all 18 pages, fully illustrated and laid out — takes under 8 minutes total. When it's done, you receive an email with a link to preview the complete book before it goes to print.
Once you approve the full book, we transmit the print-ready PDF to our print partner, who prints and binds your book within 2 business days. Hardcover orders are casewrap bound with a full-bleed cover image and printed on 60# archival coated paper — the same quality you'd find in a professionally published children's book. Softcover orders use the same interior paper with a gloss-laminated cover.
Shipping takes 3-5 business days via standard carrier. Expedited options are available at checkout. You receive a tracking number as soon as the shipment label is created — typically within 24-48 hours of your order being submitted to print.
Digital PDF customers receive their file via email immediately after the book is approved. The PDF is print-ready — if you take it to any print shop or use a home printer, the output will be identical to what we ship. We also include a low-res web-optimized version suitable for sharing.
Why we're different
Every other personalized book service puts your child's name in a story. A few of them add a cartoon face that loosely resembles your child — on the cover. Then the illustrations for pages 2 through 17 look like a completely different character.
Character consistency is a hard technical problem. We solve it by generating a detailed visual anchor description of your child before any page is illustrated, then referencing that anchor in every single illustration prompt. The result is a book that reads and looks like a real story about a real child — because it is.
Three art styles
You select a style after you see the free preview — so you can decide when you see how it looks on your child's character.
Soft, hand-painted warmth inspired by the best of classic illustrated children's books. Think Beatrix Potter reimagined with modern color theory — gentle washes of color, visible brushwork, warm natural light. This style feels intimate and timeless, the kind of illustration a child will still love at thirty.
Warm, dimensional, and cinematic — the aesthetic language of modern animated storytelling. Rich subsurface lighting, expressive faces, environments that feel fully inhabited. This style has the visual depth that makes children want to step inside the page. It reads as premium without feeling cold or overly digital.
Bold graphic shapes, clean saturated color, and confident line work — the visual language of contemporary picture books. This style prioritizes clarity and expression. Characters are immediately recognizable. Scenes are bold and readable from a distance. It has a modern, design-forward quality that appeals to children and art-minded parents alike.
Everything you need to know before you create.
Once your book is submitted to print (within hours of your order), it takes 2 business days to print and bind. Standard shipping then takes 3-5 business days. In total, expect your book 5-7 business days after you complete your order. Expedited shipping options are available at checkout for faster delivery.
For digital orders that have not yet been generated, we offer a full refund within 24 hours of purchase. Once a digital book has been generated, we do not offer refunds per our Terms of Service — the generation itself has a cost. For physical orders that have not yet been submitted to print, we offer a full refund. For printed books that arrive damaged or are lost in transit, we offer a free reprint or full refund. Full details are on our Refund Policy page.
Our books are written for children ages 2-12. The writing model adjusts vocabulary, sentence complexity, and narrative sophistication based on the child's age. A book for a 3-year-old will have shorter sentences, simpler language, and more repetition. A book for a 9-year-old will have a more complex narrative arc and richer language. All themes work across the full age range.
You can request changes before the book goes to print. Once it's been submitted to the print queue, changes to the content are not possible, though you can cancel a physical order and request a reprint at cost. To request a change, email hello@storymint.com with your order number as soon as possible.
Your child's photo is used only as a visual reference during illustration generation and is deleted from our servers 90 days after your order is placed. We do not use photos for training, do not share them with third parties, and do not retain them after the deletion window. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
